Our Reading Clinic

The Reading Clinic at Gentle Scholars Academy

Building confident readers from the ground up

At Gentle Scholars Academy, The Reading Clinic is not just a reading class—it is a comprehensive, research-based intervention program tailored for students who struggle with reading, as well as those who need a strong foundational boost. We specialize in treating reading challenges early, ensuring children not only learn to read but develop a love for reading that transforms their academic journey.

We Start with the Foundation: Phonemic Awareness

Our program begins where true literacy begins: phonemic awareness. This is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. Without this essential skill, many children struggle to decode words fluently. At The Reading Clinic, we ensure this foundation is solid and secure before moving into more complex reading skills.

The 5 Components of Reading

Our reading curriculum is structured around the National Reading Panel’s Five Pillars of Reading Instruction:

Phonemic Awareness

Understanding and manipulating sounds in spoken words

Phonics

Connecting sounds to written letters to decode words

Fluency

Reading with speed, accuracy, and proper expression

Vocabulary

Understanding the meaning of words and how to use them

Comprehension

Extracting meaning from text and thinking critically about it

Each child is assessed and supported in all five components to ensure balanced and lasting reading development.

Our Unique Approach

Unlike standard reading programs, The Reading Clinic provides personalized, skill-based instruction that is child-centred, data-driven, and built on proven literacy research.

Here’s how we’re different:

  • Customized Reading Plans: Based on an initial diagnostic assessment, we create a plan that targets the child’s specific weaknesses and strengths.
  • Multi-Sensory Instruction: We use sight, sound, touch, and movement to teach reading, which is especially effective for children with learning differences.
  • Small Group & 1:1 Support: Low student-teacher ratios allow for individual attention and accelerated progress.
  • Blended Learning Model: Traditional methods are combined with engaging digital tools and manipulatives to reinforce learning.
  • Progress Monitoring: We continuously assess growth to adjust instruction and ensure consistent improvement.
Activities that Engage and Empower

Students participate in fun, structured activities such as:

  • Phoneme segmentation games
  • Interactive read-alouds and guided reading
  • Vocabulary scavenger hunts
  • Fluency races with timers
  • Story mapping and sequencing crafts
  • Reading comprehension projects
  • Word building with magnetic letters and sand trays

Every session is designed to be interactive, motivating, and hands-on, so children stay engaged while developing crucial skills.

Today a Reader, tomorrow a Leader
